Mural Hill

61km from Guilin along the Li River, lies a 100-meter-high Hill. The side of the hill is speckled with orange, yellow and green colors, multicolored and harmonious, like a painting of nine horses. Hence the name Mural Hill.

Standing nearby and facing the Li River, Mural Hill is a famous tourist spot along the river. Exposed perennially to rain and wind, the rock on the hill was stratified and images of nine horses may be seen indistinctly on the multicolored cliff face.

Legends goes that they are originally the heavenly horses herded near Li River. Frightened by a painter, they darted into a rock by mistake, resting here forever. An enigmatic image, it is hard to distinguish all of the horses in this painting. It is said that anyone who can recognize all nine horses would be the Number One Scholar (the title conferred on the one who got the first place in the highest imperial examinationin in ancient China).
