Description:
The ancient town of Badong lies on the southern bank of the Yangtze and
to the east of the Daba Mountains. Located at the strategic point of communications
between formal Sichuan Province and Hubei Province, it is the collecting
and distributing center of goods from the mountain areas of western Hubei.
The local and special products of western Hubei such as tung oil, raw lacquer,
herbal medicines and animal skins are shipped to other places through the
highway between Badong and Enshi and by the Yangtze River. In ancient times,
Badong belonged to the State of Ba; in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) the town
was moved to the southern bank.
Located in the broad valley between Wu Gorge and Xiling
Gorge, the town of Badong offers extensive views of the surrounding areas.
Badong port/city. When you see it, it is being deserted or has been deserted.
The deadline is June 2003. See the relocated new town picture at the end
of this page. The relics under the ground tells us that people have been
living here for thousands of years.
Shennong Stream:
The adventurous cruise along the Shennong Stream is the main reason for
making a stop at this town. The Shennong Stream is asmall tributary of
the Yangtze boasting gorges that rival those of the Daning River and is
visited by many tourist ships as an alternative to the Daning River tour.
Key architectural buildings in this area include the
Autumn Wind Pavilion (Qiufeng Ting) and the White Cloud Pavilion (Baiyun
Ting). Local products include tung oil, lacquer, tea, medicinal herbs
and animal skins.
Daning River (Little Three Gorges)
Daning River rises at the southern foot of Daba Mountain of Sichuan Province,
runs through Wuxi County and Wushan County of Chongqing by twists and
turns, and joins the surging Yangtze River at entrance of the Wuxia Gorge.
A section from Wuxi County to Wushan County is around 120 kilometers long.
Between them there are numerous gorges, marvellous peaks and green waters,
as charming as a poem and as beautiful as painting. Since ancient times,
the place has been praised as "Lotusland of Gorge Prefecture".
Seven larger gorges are separated into four upper ones and three lower
ones. The latter is Longmen Gorge, Bawu Gorge and Dicui Gorge. Their beauty
of scenes may compare favorably with the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River,
known as "Little Three Gorges on the Daning River".
By comparision with the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, the landscapes
of the Little Three Gorges on the Daning River have a general resemblance
with minor differences. The Longmen Gorge with the mountains on either
side is in the form of the gate. Because of the rushing current most of
the visitors coming here go ashore and admire scenery while the boat trackers
on the bank are towing a boat against the current. The Bawu Gorge, about
ten kilometers long, is famous for rocks in stranges and sizes and fathomless
mystery. Such scenic spots as "Monkeys Catch the Moon in the River",
"Dragons In", "Tigers Out", "Horses Return the
Mountain" etc. are full of delight and interest. The Dicui Gorge
celebrated for luxuriant bamboo for luxuriant bamboo and trees and dropping
verdure are beautiful enough to feast the eyes, and its drops of green
water wet one's clothes. In the dense groves on either side wild monkeys
are often seen to appear and disappear. The wild mountain flowers in full
bloom look like rosy clouds. By contrast with clearly visible cobbles
they seem even more peaceful and clean.
Gezi River Stone Forest
The Gezi River Stone Forest, lies in the southwest of Badong, where each
of the many fantastic peaks and grotesque rocks presents its unique shape,
and tall, straight pine trees rise sheer out of verdant carpets of lush
grass. More than thirty single peaks and seven caves are linked up by
three meadows, four spots of "thread of sky" (extremely narrow
passage between huge rocks, where only a streak of the sky is seen), five
"gates", six "tunnels" and eight deep "lanes",
all crisscross to make a labyrinth of the whole place, which together
with the nearby Chuanxin Rock, Nine Dragons Scene, etc., has formed the
famous scenic spot of Gezi River Stone Forest, covering over 10 square
kilometers.
