About two hours downstream Shibaozhai the boat reaches Wanxian. 327 km away from Chongqing and 119 km from Fengjie in waterway. The city received its name during the Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644) and became a Foreign Treaty Port in 1902.

With 2,000 year history, Wanxian was once an important city in formal Sichuan Province, like Chengdu and Chongqing. Guarded by two nine-storied pagodas for good fortune, the city spreads out on both banks of the river and known as the Gateway to the Eastern Sichuan.

The downriver boats from Chongqing usually reach Wanxian in the early evening, and depart in the small hours of the following morning.

The free market is very busy in Wanxian, Silk spinning and weaving industry are well known in the Yangtze Gorges region.. A shore excursion to the local bazaar is usually offered by the cruise lines. One of the city's free markets sells local produce and seasonal delicacies such as mountain mushrooms or live eels. The Second Street (Er Main) is the main shopping thorough fare. Shengli Lu is afamous night market where Wanxian rattan and cane are sold. Handmade summer bed mats, fans, hats, straw shoes, furniture and baskets are traded roadside every night. It is a best place for you to gain bargain skills. Also you can have a try on some local snacks like spicy noodles and cooling soybean jelly and fresh fruit.

The exciting acrobatic show is well known in this region. Visitors may also visit silk-weaving and cane-furniture factories. Textile industry, the port and the local produce like oranges, tangerines, peaches, bamboo, lumber, still keep Wanxian an important city and port along the Three Gorges area.
